Set in the idyllic village of Colston Bassett in the Vale of Belvoir, the Martins Arms is a spectacular Grade 2 listed building. Situated at the corner of a quiet leafy cul-de-sac by an old cross, the Inn encapsulates all that is best in an English pub. But to call it the quintessential English hostelry does not do it justice. Surrounded by ancient trees, in estate parkland with National Trust land just a stones throw away, the Martin's Arms is a welcome retreat at any time of the year.

On balmy days sit outside in the beautiful landscaped gardens overlooked only by the church spire and the ocassional inquisitive sheep. Relax, or play croquet, or dine on the parasoled tables under the setting sun.

As the nights draw in and the temperatures drop find a cosy corner of the well-stocked bar or stretch out in front of one of the roaring log fires. The ancient Jacobean fireplaces and the hunting scenes on the walls remind the visitor of aspects of English country life which have changed little down the ages. The period furnishings of the Inn, the rich reds and beautiful flower arrangemets exude a solidity and quality which is reflected in the food and drink. Note the many good food awards that adorn the mantlepieces including Nottingham's Best Pub/Restaurant and a coveted Michelin.

A meal at The Martins guarantees an extra special dining experience whether you are eating informally in the bar or in the oak-tabled, silver service dining room. Cooking is always to order using the freshest ingredients, on maybe the smoked charcoal grill or en souvide, made famous by Heston Blumenthal and Sat Bains - a former Martins Arms chef.

Ale drinkers will rejoice at the exceptional choice in the bar - Bass, Pedigree, Wherry, Timothy Taylor's Landlord, Greene King IPA, Cumberland or perhaps a Black Dog. Strongbow cider is available on draft and a distinguished range of whiskies and brandies as well as an extensive wine list are all on offer.

The Inn is also becoming a popular venue for corporate conferences where the quietness and hospitable facilities are much appreciated.

If you're passing by - drop IN - and drop OUT of the ratrace as the Martins Arms works its ancient charm.
